Ray Bryant - charlie
Of all the jazz out there, very few can emulate the sense of delicacy you feel when you listen to Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue. Ray Bryant is one who can. They call Bryant a “two handed pianist”, which is ironic but proves a good point. The reason for Bryant’s incredible listenability is that he is truly giving you two different hands worth of music. Normally, as in my case, my left hand plays the simpler bass part to wrangle in the right hand. Bryant does no wrangling.
This album, from 1957, is quickly becoming one of my favorites. The drummer and bassist are right with Bryant, but give him the space he needs to fully express himself. Plus he looks like a badass on the cover.
